MALANG : Excellent Human Resources (HR) is the most valuable asset for the Indonesian nation. To make the Indonesian nation a strong and advanced country, superior human resources are needed. One of the superior human resources is gifted children. In the study of psychology, special intelligent students are individuals with high cognitive potential and have a positive character.

“The existence of special intelligent students needs to be recognized early on. That’s why I and the team held a special intelligent student identification training, for teachers and parents of Malang State University (UM) Laboratory Elementary School students,” said Aji Bagus Priyambodo, S.Psi., M.Psi, Psychologist, from the Community Service Team of the Faculty of Education. Psychology, State University of Malang, Friday (8 October 2021).

In the Community Service Team, Faculty of Psychology Education, State University of Malang, as the Chairperson, namely Aji Bagus Priyambodo, S.Psi., M.Psi, Psychologist. With members of Dr. Nur Eva, S.Psi., M.Psi, Psychologist and Dr. Tutut Chusniyah, all three are lecturers at the Faculty of Psychology, UM.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the training is conducted online or online (on the network). This training on the identification of special intelligent students was attended by around 100 people, consisting of teachers and parents of students at the Laboratory Elementary School, State University of Malang.

There are a number of interesting materials in the training. The training materials included the Learning Styles of Gifted Children and their Mentoring brought by Dr. Siti Suminarti Fasikhah, M.Si, a Psychologist from the Faculty of Psychology, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, and Characteristics and Interventions of Gifted Students were presented by Isrida Yul Arifiana., M.Psi., a lecturer psychologist at the Faculty of Psychology, University of 17 August 1945, Surabaya.

According to Dr. Siti Suminarti Fasikhah, there are several unique features of gifted children or special intelligent children. Among them is having a quick understanding of complex information. In addition, he also pays attention to details, is able to think flexibly and has a comprehensive synthesis. This special intelligent child can also participate in deep learning and is able to act independently without depending on other parties.

“In principle, gifted children are very heterogeneous. Meanwhile, a conducive learning environment for gifted children is a learning environment that can make them active, self-regulating and goal-oriented,” said Dr. Siti Suminarti Fasikhah, M.Si.

Affirmed by Isrida Yul Arifiana., M.Psi., gifted students or “special intelligent” students are students who have extraordinary intelligence. The term in English is known as “Gifted Children”.

According to Isrida Yul Arifiana, students who have high intelligence are not enough to determine the potential for intelligence and special talents. Likewise, creativity without commitment to the task does not guarantee superior performance. Therefore, the interaction between intelligence, creativity, and responsibility or task commitment is an essential element in determining whether students are classified as “Gifted Children” or Gifted students.

“A student who is identified as a gifted student or special intelligent student, according to several studies, has the potential to be more successful than his friends who are not identified as a special intelligent student. In this regard, the most important thing is how they can use their abilities with optimal performance. Therefore, parents, teachers and the social environment are needed to provide support to the abilities of gifted students, so that their special potential can be realized in the form of maximum achievement,” added Isrida Yul Arifiana., M.Psi., Psychologist.

This training activity on the identification of special intelligent students was held by the Community Service Team from UM coordinated by Aji Bagus Priyambodo, S.Psi., M.Psi, Psychologist. According to Aji Bagus Priyambodo, M.Psi, quantitatively, these special intelligent children are not many, namely around 2-5 percent of the total population. A number of developed countries rely heavily on these special intelligent students to develop science and technology.

Therefore, it is very unfortunate that currently there are many cases of gifted children who are not identified properly, so that their potential cannot develop optimally. That’s why his team together with the team then held a training to identify gifted children for teachers and parents at the Laboratory Elementary School, State University of Malang.

“The training went smoothly and was successful, because the participants were very enthusiastic. With this training, it is hoped that it will increase the competence of teachers and parents in identifying special intelligent students. Besides that, it can also increase and optimize the potential of special intelligent students in contributing to the progress of the nation and state,” said Aji Bagus Priyambodo, S.Psi., M.Psi, Psychologist.
