This activity was based on acquiring Community Service Grant funds from UM Internal Funds 2023. PPKB is one of the certified activities in the field of community service that aims to improve the competency and quality of students, especially FMIPA UM.

The activity was held every month from May to October 2023, and is carried out by Indra Kurniawan Saputra, S.Si, M.Si as project leader, and Prof. Dr. Evi Susanti, S.Si, M.Si, Dra. Dwi Listyorini, M.Si, D.Sc, Dr. Norman Yoshi Haryono, S.Si, Intan Chairun Nisa, S.Si, M.Biotech. Undergraduate biotechnology students were also involved as part and support of the project team. They were Alfina Kusuma Dewi, Ananda Handewi Pramesti, Anissafa Atul Husna, David Al Muqorrobin, Faradila Ayu Fitria, and Restya Dwi Atiiqah. This training was attended by FMIPA students from UM.

The innovation presented to participants was modifying the tempeh component. Modification of nutrient tempeh yeast (“Laru” in Bahasa) is by adding indigenous plants such as Moringa olifera leaves which can improve the health of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and prevent stunting. This competency improvement activity aims to help students open business opportunities with innovations and produce tempeh as a functional food. This also aligns with SDG no. 9, namely innovation to improve the economy by applying processes and technology.

Increasing student competency and innovation is very important and needs to be planned, directed, and sustainably to increase capability and professionalism. Meanwhile, Students’ skills and understanding in creating innovation opportunities are not evenly distributed. According to a circular in the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 13 of 2022, “as a vehicle for education and a vehicle for innovation, universities have a strategic role in producing the science, technology, and innovation that society needs.” One effort to improve the quality of innovation for students is through competency training. PPKB activities: Training on Making Modified Tempe Biotechnology Products can solve this problem.

PPKB activities are held in several sessions. The first session was the activity’s opening and continued with the presentation of the material “Tempeh and its Benefits”. The second session was about “Simulation of Making Normal and Modified Laru Tempe”, and the third was about “Checking Laru Tempe Colonies”. The fourth session is about “Making Tempe”. The fifth session was about “Tempe Product Evaluation” and the final session was about “Feedback and Closing”. All activities were conducted face to face in Building B25 and Building B18 FMIPA. This activity was attended by 23 participants consisting of FMIPA students from the State University of Malang.

Thursday, May 25th 2023, the Opening of the Sustainable Activity Development Program, we call it PPKB for Making Modified Tempe as Biotechnology Products by Indra Kurniawan Saputra, S.Si, M.Sc, Lecturer in the Biotechnology Study Program, Universitas Negeri Malang (UM).
