The Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), organized a webinar titled ‘Gamification in Learning,’ inviting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azean Atan from Universiti Teknologi Malaya (UTM), Malaysia, as the speaker. The webinar was held on Tuesday, 12 July 2023, from 12.30 to 15.15 West Indonesian Time Zone and was attended by 336 participants from various countries, such as Somalia, Afghanistan, Timor Leste, etc.
The event commenced with the MC, Dr. Anita Dewi Utami, M.Pd, leading the National Anthem ‘Indonesia Raya.’ Following that, Latifah Mustofa Lestyanto, S.Si, M.Pd, the chairperson, opened the webinar, and then speeches were delivered by the Head of the Mathematics Department, Lathiful Anwar, S.Si, M.Sc, Ph.D, and the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Malang, Prof. Hadi Suwono, M.Si.
The main agenda was an explanation from Assoc. Prof. Noor Azean, moderated by Azizah, S.Pd, M.Si. Assoc. Prof. Noor Azean began her explanation by posing the question, “Can game elements be applied to learning?” Almost 90% of the participants responded that game elements can indeed be applied to learning. The speaker then proceeded to explain gamification in education, particularly in mathematics, in a highly engaging and interactive manner. They also provided an example project of gamification in mathematics that they were currently developing. In this project, the speaker incorporated various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) elements, particularly those related to science, such as topics on clean energy, climate change, and various activities related to environmental preservation. This was evident from the project’s background setting, which featured a forest landscape.
Towards the end of the session, several questions arose regarding the material presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azean Atan. Some of these questions included inquiries about the weaknesses of gamification implementation or the essential skills required to apply game elements in education.
This webinar activity is part of the series of International Short Courses with the theme “From Algorithms to Education: Exploring the Vital Role of Mathematics in IT Development and Education,” which will continue until August 30, 2023. This event supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly Goals 4, 13, 14, 15, and 17.
